What is a Life Cycle Assessment?
A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) quantifies the environmental impact of a product or system across its full life cycle — from raw material extraction through production, use and end of life. Conducted in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, an LCA provides the technical foundation for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), carbon footprint calculations and informed sustainability decisions.

What you receive at the end of the project
The deliverables depend on the goal of the study; the items below are what a typical ISO 14040/44 study delivers.
- Goal and scope document — functional unit, system boundary, data-quality requirements and limitations, in writing.
- Data collection template and the completed inventory (LCI) — with every item traceable to its source.
- LCA model — background database selection and assumptions documented.
- Impact assessment (LCIA) results — the relevant impact categories, per module where required.
- Interpretation and sensitivity analysis — which inputs drive the result, and where the hotspots are.
- LCA report under ISO 14040/44 — structured so that it can serve as the basis for an EPD or a PCF declaration in the next step.
How LCA, EPD and PCF connect
Three separate outputs, one technical basis. Setting up that relationship from the start saves you from collecting the same data twice.

What data is requested from the manufacturer
Data collection is the longest step of the process. If the items below are ready, the timeline shortens noticeably.
- Product recipe and raw-material inputs — with quantities and supplier information, for the chosen reference year.
- Energy consumption — electricity, natural gas and other fuels; where possible separable by product or production line.
- Production quantities — for the same reference year, so that the allocation can be set up.
- Packaging, waste and production losses.
- Transport — inbound raw-material distances and modes, and outbound product distances where needed.
- For multi-product sites, the basis for allocation: which resource goes to which product, in what proportion.
When does an LCA study make sense?
- When your customer, contractor or a tender specification asks for product-level environmental data.
- When you plan to publish an EPD — the LCA is its technical basis.
- When you will declare a product carbon footprint under ISO 14067.
- When a product-development decision needs to show which material or process drives the result.
- When data is requested under green-building certification (LEED, BREEAM) or EU regulation (ESPR, CPR).
